Many of the questions that patients ask our Hasbrouck Heights orthodontist are about extractions, and why extractions are necessary before some orthodontic work can take place. While extractions are not always necessary, in many cases they are in order for your orthodontic treatment to be as successful as possible. In most cases, our orthodontist in Hasbrouck Heights calls for extractions for adult patients, because unlike pediatric patients, their palates have finished expanding, and there will be no increase of room for teeth to be spread apart in adult patients.
If your teeth are crowded and you are seeking orthodontic treatment in order to straighten them, some of your teeth may need to be removed in order to make space for the crowded teeth to be straightened out. Dr. Gorkowitz usually begins by recommending that the wisdom teeth be removed if they have not been removed already earlier in life. From there, if more teeth need to be extracted to make the proper amount of space, Dr. Gorkowitz may recommend that the back bicuspids be removed, and in order to remain symmetrical, the same teeth on the upper and lower parts of the jaw will need to both be removed. We only resort to tooth extractions if we deem them completely necessary, and if we fully believe that the extractions are required to give you the results you are seeking.
